The reduction of receptor sensitivity would lead to a subsequent increase in synthesis, resulting increased release of neurotransmitters and eventually the over-production of dopamine. This dopamine is thought to occur for two reasons: A dopamine release, after the acute stimulation of neurotransmitter, leads to increased synthesis in post-synaptic synapses.
